Advanced Diagnostics
How molecular assays and sequencing technologies expand pathogen detection in meningitis research and clinical microbiology.
01 / DIAGNOSTIC TECHNOLOGIES
Molecular approaches to pathogen identification
Advanced laboratory methods complement conventional cerebrospinal fluid analysis, microscopy, culture, and other clinically indicated investigations.
Multiplex PCR
Simultaneously tests for a defined panel of microbial nucleic acid targets. Detection is restricted to targets included in the assay.
16S rRNA gene PCR
Detects conserved bacterial genetic regions and may help identify certain bacterial infections when conventional cultures are negative.
Metagenomic sequencing
Investigates microbial nucleic acids more broadly, potentially detecting pathogens not anticipated by targeted testing.
02 / CLINICAL TRANSLATION
The promise and limits of metagenomics
Metagenomic next-generation sequencing can identify a broad range of potential pathogens from cerebrospinal fluid. Clinical studies demonstrate its value as an additional diagnostic approach in selected cases.
Interpretation requires attention to background contamination, sensitivity, sequencing depth, bioinformatics quality, and whether detected nucleic acid indicates the cause of illness.
No single assay excludes every pathogen.
Results must be interpreted alongside clinical presentation, timing, specimen quality, routine laboratory findings, and complementary testing.
